Wayne 'Hawaii 501' Mardle

Born in Romford in 1973, Wayne Mardle is a naturally gifted darts player who started playing at the age of 11 and who has reached as high as fifth in the PDC world rankings. A hugely popular player, Wayne is undoubtedly one of the most colourful characters on the PDC tour and his matches are always anything but dull.

Unfortunately for Wayne his Hawaiian shirts have become his trademark rather than his darting prowess, and the Essex man is still waiting for his first major title. Like so many others, his dreams have often been shattered by the ruthless Phil Taylor, the man who defeated 'Hawaii 501' in the 2003 World Matchplay final as well as the 2004 and 2005 finals of the Las Vegas Desert Classic.

A consistently excellent performer in the World Championship, Wayne reached three consecutive semi-finals in 2004, 2005 and 2006 - a close match with Mark Dudbridge sandwiched between two more heart-breaking defeats to Taylor.

Mardle's best performace in the UK Open came in 2004 when he reached the last 16 stage - only to lose a wonderful match to, almost inevitably, Phil Taylor - crashing out after an 8-7 epic. His other three UK Open appearances have all seen him exit in the 4th round, including an 11-10 defeat to Taylor's protege Adrian Lewis in 2006 in what was one of the best matches ever seen in the Bolton Arena.

Wayne was not amongst the favourites for the 2007 UK Open title, and it was only the briefest of tournaments for the Essex man in Bolton. Drawn against Dennis Ovens in round 4, he never got going and was on the wrong end of an 11-7 defeat. Can Wayne finally find the consistency to match his talent in time to take the 2008 title?
